Engagement with the Trump Administration on trade
I will visit the United States this week to further the Turnbull Government’s engagement with the Trump Administration on trade.
In Washington, D.C. I will meet with the US Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross. This follows
valuable meetings with the United States Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Ministerial Council Meeting in Paris last week, and earlier at the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade gathering in Hanoi.
The United States is a key economic partner for Australia. It is the largest investor in Australia and is Australia’s largest investment destination. Two-way investment was worth $1.48 trillion last year.
The United States is our second largest trading partner. Our trade and investment relationship has flourished under the Australia – United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA). Since it entered into force, two-way trade has grown from $42 billion in 2005 to $64 billion in 2016.
