Micrology Coffee Roasters
Micrology is an independent coffee roaster in Perth, Western Australia. It sources and roasts coffees from around the world, with a focus on highlighting their unique flavour profiles and elevating the coffee experience for its customers.
Need
After more than a decade of growth, Micrology Coffee Roasters identified Southeast Asia as its next expansion opportunity, driven by the region’s large population and booming coffee culture. To establish a foothold in the market, it needed funding and confidence to pursue its export ambitions.
Solution
We provided Micrology with a $100,000 Small Business Export Loan, giving the business the funding certainty to secure a prime site in Bali and establish its first overseas presence. With finance in place, the business could move quickly when the right opportunity arose.
Micrology Coffee Roasters was ready to take the next step in its growth journey and expand into Southeast Asia to cater to a growing specialty coffee culture. With our support, the business was able to move quickly when the right site became available to establish a presence in Bali.
After more than 10 years as a wholesale supplier, and more recently as a retailer serving high-end beans and brews to Perth’s caffeinistas, Micrology Coffee Roasters had reached a growth ceiling.
With a strong local reputation but limited market size, future growth opportunities were becoming harder to find close to home.
Owner Operator, Daniel Ash knew the business would need to look beyond Western Australia to continue growing.
“Perth is a pretty small place in the scheme of things,” he said, “So we got to a point of, ‘what next?’”
Rather than competing in Australia's already crowded coffee markets, Micrology began exploring opportunities overseas. Following a trip to Jakarta, Daniel developed a business plan to expand into Southeast Asia, where the business was already sourcing a growing proportion of its coffee beans.
“It was very exciting to see this huge population, and a growing middle class talking about and enjoying coffee in a really sophisticated way,” Daniel explained. “We saw a booming market.”
The finance from Export Finance Australia allowed me to pull the trigger on a site that I believe will be key to our expansion and success. We had the confidence to move quickly because we had that support in place.

Brewing growth in a new market
Micrology identified Bali as its first international expansion opportunity, but securing finance to support the move proved challenging. It was at this point Daniel got in touch with our team, and we were able to help identify options early in the planning process.
“It was important to have that discussion early on to really understand what capacity we had to be able to execute on our business plan,” Daniel said.
We provided a $100,000 Small Business Export Loan for Micrology to pursue its Bali expansion plans.
According to Daniel, “The application process was seamless. It felt like Export Finance Australia was genuinely supporting us in trying to obtain that finance we needed.”
The loan gave Micrology the confidence and flexibility to act quickly when it identified a high-profile site for its Bali outlet and needed to commit.
“In Bali, to jump on a premises in a very competitive market, sometimes you need to make a call in a week, and that was the end result.” Daniel said.
Espresso success from Perth to Bali
With a Small Business Export Loan in place, Micrology was able to secure premises, complete renovations and prepare to launch operations in Bali in mid-2026.
The new location serves as a retail destination and a platform for winning wholesale customers across the region.
With the right finance in place, Micrology turned its expansion plans into reality, establishing a presence in Bali and creating a foundation for further global growth.
